What is a Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle?
A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is a hybrid vehicle with batteries that can be recharged by connecting a plug to an electric power source. It shares the characteristics of both conventional hybrid electric vehicles and battery electric vehicles, having an internal combustion engine and batteries for power.

DUECO's PHEV

DUECO, in conjunction with Odyne, has developed the nation's first plug-in hybrid system for medium and heavy duty trucks. The PHEV system powers aerial lifts, digger derricks and other hydraulically powered equipment, such as compressors for utility gas trucks. The plug-in hybrid system increases fuel efficiency when the truck is driven and improves vehicle performance, through hybrid launch assist and regenerative braking. When at a job site, the truck’s hybrid battery system powers all boom hydraulic functions and climate control system for a normal work day, without the use of the diesel engine. The system dramatically reduces noise and eliminates any emissions while in battery mode.

When the truck returns to the garage at the end of a work day, it is plugged into a three-phase, 240-volt outlet. The batteries recharge during off-peak hours using lower-cost electricity.

The system can also be recharged at any point with the conventional diesel engine. The system provides the fuel efficiency and emission enhancements typical of a hybrid vehicle, while the truck is traveling to and from the work site.

  • Reduces fuel consumption 5-10 gallons per day.
  • Enhanced reliability with redundant power for critical operations.
  • Uses low cost, domestically produced energy from nation’s electric grid.
  • A stored energy system is a completely self-contained unit with batteries, chargers, and energy/thermal management.
  • 9 Kwh or more exportable power available.
  • Versatile system available on any truck chassis with an Allison transmission and a GVWR greater than 16,000 lbs.
  • Advanced diagnostics & data acquisition available.

Upfit/Retrofit
DUECO's PHEV system is available for upfit or retrofit on vehicles currently in the field. The same technology and operating benefits apply, however there are certain requirements needed in order to upfit. These include:

  • Packaging space for components.
  • Type of transmission, availability of PTO opening.
  • Drive train data communications.
  • Available payload for additional weight of a PHEV system.
